A Bit of History For You

St Alban's Cathedral

Apart from being rather excited about winning a free trip to Morocco this past weekend, I also did quite a bit of adventuring around a little place named St Albans.  This tiny little destination is packed full of history in every single street and corner.  One particular infamous piece of infrastructure is the St Albans Cathedral or, as the local people refer to it, The Abbey.

Now, don't quote me on any of this but I'm sure that The Abbey is one of the oldest cathedrals around.  It certainly is the cathedral of the first Christian martyr St Alban himself.  I'm not too sure on many of the other facts but I do recall from the free tour that I attended, there was some sort of an earthquake involved which meant a lot of restoration work had to be undertaken.  Also, from simply walking through The Abbey I noticed that is surely has to be one of the longest cathedral's in England because my gosh it's long!  I can't tell you too much more of what I know about the Abbey now but I definitely can show you...

The Abbey on a beautiful day in England!

After learning all I could about the Abbey, there was much more to learn about the town itself.  Like for instance, the amount of ducks and swans down in the park.  Who would've known that on such a bright and sunny day that almost half of the ducks in the park were doing duck dives into the pond.  Although, maybe ducks aren't your thing?  How about the oldest pub in England?  Yes, that's right, the oldest pub in England!  Well no one is officially sure which pub in England is the oldest as there are actually quite a few contenders however Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is deemed the oldest according the The Guinness Book of Records.  It seems damn old when you find out the foundations were dated back to 793.  I mean, WOW, that's the first century!

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks.

This is one of my mid-week posts, therefore it's quite short and simple.  But please let me know if you have any ideas or critiques you have to add to my blog or even this post in particular.  Also, if you want to leave a comment please feel free too!  Once again, I hope you have a wonderful day everyone.  Keep on keeping on!

  1. There is a place near Ipswich called Lavenham. It's full of old buildings and what's more the Witchfinder General-Matthew Hopkins burned some witches around there. There's not much to do in Lavenham, tho you can have tea in the old Guildhall which I imagine is pretty good.

  2. And... there is a village in Dorset which was evacuated by the army at the beginning of WWII (the area was used for training i believe) and has remained deserted since, the school still has all the kids books in. Prayer books still in the church. Its kinda eerie. I heartily recommend you take in some of the other parts of the UK, there's some awesome stuff out there.
