City Farms and Pop Up Cinemas

In the midst of an English thunderstorm it only seems fitting to type out another blog post for all of you.  While I listen to the cracking thunder and watch the forks of lightning spring down on the city I really can't think of anything I would rather be doing (but this, of course).  Although last week had some spectacular sights, this week was more animal and people orientated.  Due to my longing to cuddle Oscar (my family dog back at home), I decided to head out with my kiwi friend Kali to attend a free city farm in Spitalfields.

The Spitalfields City Farm was small, and very family friendly however there was plenty of farm animals to see.  We heard the grunts of wild pigs, watched some goats lay in the shade and let some cows follow our hands (obviously they were a little bit peckish).  However, my absolute highlight of this outing was being able to cuddle a particular animal.  Now, not everyone will agree with how cute and friendly this animal is but please don't judge these little guys until you've experienced a cuddle with them.  So... yes, I cuddled a ferret named Oscar.  Completely by coincidence that the name of the ferret was Oscar (I was stoked about this).  Oscar, an albino ferret was a little energetic but nevertheless he nestled into me and played around on my arms.  The trip out to the farm was definitely worth this experience!

Oscar and I having some cuddles!

After the farm visit, I was a little inspired by the entire farming atmosphere so I decided upon planting spinach in our garden.  To be honest, I was more convinced than inspired.  My housemate, Anna, had been speaking about growing herbs and veg in our backyard for a while and I thought it would be an awesome idea.  So, one evening Anna returned home with a sack full of compost and ten biodegradable pots for spinach, broccoli and basil.  We spent the evening planting them and talking about what else we could plant (mostly Anna taught me whole lot about what the seasons are like for growing food).  Hopefully I can monitor the growth of the spinach and let you all know when we have a beaming vegetable garden!

A few days after the spinach planting I realised that I had booked tickets to a pop up cinema event by Press Play, to see Casablanca.  So I packed my bag for a good night with some wonderful friends.  Emily, a work colleague and Sarah, a former work colleague were, or so they told me, excited for this pop up cinema event.  It was a little different to most of the pop up cinema events in the fact that it was screened underground (literally in an underground station).  It was all a little magical with the intimate audience (only around 40 people) and candles lit around the outskirts of the room.  Also, it was slightly wonderful that they provided us with a sandwich, dried fruit, sweet popcorn and hard sweets.  In the end, I think the event was a massive hit and I believe that we will no doubt be going to more in the future.  Oh and just a little note about the photographs here... I didn't take my camera that night so these two of these photos are taken on my phone -- SORRY!

A half full cinema room, ready and raring to watch Casablanca!
Outside the cinema room
Urban Fruit, Propercorn and Press Play stylised sweets!
All in all, a good week was had.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead and remember to let me know if there's anything you would like me to post about.  See you next week folks!
