Baz Lurhmann once said "live in New York city once but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once but leave before it makes you soft," (from Lurhmann's song
Sunscreen). I believe this to be true in regards to London. The big smoke is a city that will make you hard. You might not be able to see that it's that kind of city at first, but eventually you will understand. It hasn't happened for me yet, but I can see that one day it might do. Therefore I want to appreciate it for all its worth while I'm here enjoying the ride.
Following on from the previous week of all things lovely in London, I thought that my readers might want to hear a little something that I love about London as well. Of course, I most definitely agree with everything that everyone mentioned in the previous post however I do have some of my own "London loves" too. So without further ado, here they are:
When buskers suddenly capture the attention of every single person on a busy city street.
 |
| A lone busker in the middle of Leicester Square. |
When the afternoon light hits the tops of buildings.
That first time you walk to the bus stop without having to rush at all and the bus is just seconds from you. Perfection.
The free events held by the city that bring together various groups of people.
 |
| Fireworks in a nearby park for Guy Fawkes day! |
When you catch the tube late at night, but not too late, where it's so quiet and serene that you kind of become thankful for this wonderful public transport system.
When you suddenly realise you're living in the middle of a bustling city at the exact moment you're sitting in the middle of Hyde park calmly reading a book.
The adventures you can take without really going far.
 |
| Me headed through platform 9 3/4. |
The kind strangers that smile at you in such a way where you know they completely understand you.
The fact that there is something for everyone in this city. No matter who you are, where you've come from, what you enjoy doing, what you love, etc.
It's a place where history and art are just as important as each other.
 |
I'm not sure if this is history, however it definitely is art.
You can even see Madz popping her head up behind it! |
I really should have taken photographs for the "London loves" that aren't bolded however I truly didn't have the time this week. Instead, I shall begin the task of playing with photography and make sure to do at least one page out of The Photographer's Playbook every week! Until next week, happy reading everyone.
I really love the view from Nine Elms Pier (on the Thames, near to Vauxhall bridge), it has great views in all directions. Also I love the architecture of The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, gothic and dark, however they are beautifully lit at night. You should give 'London Loves' by blur a listen, if only because it ties in nicely with this blog post.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to Nine Elms Pier yet so I'll make sure I do this! I completely agree though, the dark and gothic architecture is really fantastic and just adds to this historical city. Ohhh I will make sure to check out that song definitely! Thanks anonymous :)
